The Faculty of Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists, RCSI invites applications from radiologists on the Specialist Register of the Medical Council of Ireland for the position of Education Development Officer, Radiology (EDO).   Applicants must hold FFRRCSI or equivalent qualification. 

The Radiology Postgraduate Training programme is organized into 4 years of Basic Training and 1-2 years of Higher Training in Radiology (depending on the subspecialty). There are currently 146 Radiology SpRs in place in 9 University-affiliated Teaching Hospitals.  The key roles of the EDO are:

  1. To work in conjunction with the National Training Programme Coordinator. 
  1. To supervise, organize and coordinate the delivery of the existing Basic Training Programme lecture schedule and modules (Emergency Radiology, Ultrasound, Professionalism, Interventional Radiology).
  1. To organize the Mock Part I and Part II examinations and the annual SpR assessments.
  1. With responsibility for matters relating to Interventional Radiology (IR) training and Skills day organisation. IR is in the process of becoming an independently recognised specialty and it is expected that the duties of the post will reflect this change in emphasis, likely becoming a designated NTPC for IR either within the timeframe of this post or in the future.
  1. To undertake a project to assess training numbers relative to other specialties.
  1. To coordinate the annual shortlisting and interview process for the Basic and Higher Training Programmes in conjunction with the Dean, Officers and Executive Officer.
  1. To attend the scheduled Educational Committee meetings, Shortlisting, Interview and Assessment days, the ‘Train the Trainer’ and ‘Doctor in Difficulty’ meetings and to meet/ liaise with the Dean and others as required for efficient management of affairs.
  1. To liaise with the Dean and the Chair, Fellowship Advisory Committee and Educational Coordinators about SpRs in difficulty within the programme.
  1. The post-holder may wish to be the Faculty representative at some committees pertaining to training and career planning and to interface with other bodies such as HSE and Medical Council on relevant matters. This option is available but not mandatory.

All of these have established formats and calendars that are open for review by the NTPC/EDO.

The successful applicant will report to the Dean and Board of the Faculty and will work within a strongly supportive established infrastructure including administrative and clerical support, a network of Hospital Educational Coordinators, Education and Fellowship Advisory Committees, Chief Examiners for the Part I and Part II examinations and an Educational infrastructure subcommittee to maintain existing standards and further develop assessment and training within the programme.  The size and organization of the programme delivery team is also open to review.  

The time commitment of this role is envisaged at 0.1 - 0.2 WTE however the exact commitment will be agreed with the successful candidate. If the EDO is currently a full-time Consultant Radiologist in an Irish hospital, the Faculty Clinical Support mechanism will provide backfill/ locum support equivalent to the required time commitment to their Radiology Department through mechanisms governed by the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the Faculty.  If not, an equivalent arrangement will be made for remuneration based on HSE pay-scales applicable to holders of current Consultants contract.  

This post is an exciting opportunity for those at any stage of their Consultant Radiology career who have an interest in post graduate education and management. It is a national, increasingly dynamic leadership role, both influencing and responding to the modern healthcare environment.  To further the aim of programme development, the Faculty will fund the EDO to attend one major international meeting per annum relevant to education and training, e.g. the Association of University Radiologists (USA) or the RCPSC Resident Training meeting (Canada).  Training in Leadership/ Management may be funded if appropriate. There is opportunity for research on education and training and the successful candidate will enjoy the support of the Faculty, hospital local coordinators and trainee representatives in this regard.  The post-holder also has use of the newly refurbished RCSI office facilities, audio-visual support and presentation facilities. This is initially a 2-year post, the EDO will be eligible for annual re-appointment depending on performance and mutual agreement etc.
